Target Moon & Social Media

The 8th graders have been hard at work in Gifted this year learning about comets and meteors and the dangers they pose to the Earth as well as the moon.  This week we just learned about a comet called ISON that will come close to our sun on Thanksgiving Day.  If the comet is not sucked up by the sun's gravity, we may actually be able to see the comet!

That being said, we are also working on an assignment I'm calling the Social Media assignment.  It was spawned by us looking at the twitter account of an astronaut named Chris Hadfield who tweeted about his entire experience on the International Space Station earlier this year (https://twitter.com/Cmdr_Hadfield).  He did this to raise public interest in space travel and is considered a celebrity in Canada (where he's from).  So along with the discussion of the power of social media, I decided to have students team up and create their own mock twitter page and tweet text, photos, and at least one video they shoot and edit about a random topic in connection with space.  (For example: Deep Space Locker Travel, or the Discovery of Aliens in the Cafeteria).  So far, students are being VERY creative and coming up with some interesting topics.  I can't wait to see the finished products!

Here are a couple of photos from this week:
